A Brief History
The story of Redeemer Presbyterian Church is the story of God's providence.
A phone call in October 2002 brought together one of our founding members and Reverend Tom Vanden Heuvel, from the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) church planting network. Several families gathered on February 6, 2003 for the first of many monthly Bible studies with Reverend Vanden Heuvel. These meetings led to weekly fellowship and organizational meetings throughout 2003.
Meanwhile, Pastor Dan Millward, entered seminary studies at Reformed Theological Seminary in the year 2000. After beginning his studies, Dan was asked to serve as interim pastor at Northland Community Church here in Traverse City. Members of the PCA Bible study discovered Pastor Millward and began attending Northland, bringing together two groups of believers united in their desire for a new reformed church.
Redeemer held its first worship service as a mission church of the PCA on July 4, 2004. We became an independent church April 24, 2005. Thankfully remembering God's faithfulness, we look forward with great anticipation to what He will accomplish in the future.
Our Church Vision
Worship
Our Sunday morning service is a Covenant Renewal Ceremony: a weekly depiction and reminder of the story of our salvation. As such, it is liturgical and prepared for believers and their households, and includes the weekly celebration of the Lord's Supper. Worship is for the glory of God and the blessing of believers, and is not a suitable forum for performance, entertainment, or outreach.Nurture
We desire a friendly, family-based church life over one that is segregated and programmed. Our pastor and elders are committed to a covenantal, reformed understanding of scripture in their teaching and oversight. It is our desire that, where possible, fathers play a central role in catechizing and instructing their children. We encourage families to gather alone, and with others, in their homes for meals, fellowship, and private worship. We are committed to growing in genuine concern and care for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of each church member and family.Outreach
We are committed to equipping believers, through consistent teaching and example, to live lives of wisdom and faithfulness at home, at work, and in our community. Our hope is that our members may give a clear and meaningful answer for the hope they display, be moved to invite others into our church family, and demonstrate heartfelt concern and kindness for the secular community. We value deliberate prayerful and financial support for missions both here and abroad.Note: You can also download a copy of our church vision statement below.
